Electrical work follows NEC 2023, adopted as Michigan's Part 8 Electrical Code rules effective March 12, 2024. Commercial and multi-family structural work follows the 2021 IBC, effective April 9, 2025. But residential structural work for 1-2 family dwellings — where the vast majority of solar installations occur — is frozen at the 2015 Michigan Residential Code (MRC) following a Michigan Court of Claims order issued July 7, 2025 that temporarily blocks LARA from implementing the updated 2021 MRC while litigation continues.
For solar installers, this means: your single-line diagram and electrical schematic reference NEC 2023, but your roof structural calculations for a residential 1-2 family home reference the 2015 MRC — not the 2021 edition many template plan sets default to. Using 2021 MRC structural references on a Michigan residential plan set creates a code citation mismatch with the currently enforced 2015 standard for 1-2 family dwellings. Commercial and multi-family solar projects use 2021 IBC structural provisions, which are unaffected by the residential court order.
Michigan's two dominant utilities — DTE Energy (Metro Detroit, Southeast Michigan) and Consumers Energy (West and Central Michigan) — both follow MPSC interconnection rules under PA 295 of 2008 and PA 342 of 2016. Systems under 20 kW qualify for simplified interconnection. Michigan's net metering cap was raised from 1% to 10% of utility peak load under PA 235 of 2023, securing program availability.
