Full Retail Rate · Through December 31, 2034
Customers who submitted a completed interconnection request and had their system installed by December 31, 2019 are grandfathered under the prior net metering rules. Their net excess generation is credited at the full retail rate — approximately 12 cents per kilowatt-hour for Entergy Louisiana customers. This grandfathering lasts 15 years from interconnection, through December 31, 2034. After that date, even grandfathered pre-2020 customers move to the avoided cost structure. If your installation base includes pre-2020 Louisiana solar systems, those customers should understand the 2034 transition is coming.
Post-2019 Customers — New Rule
Avoided Cost ~2.7¢/kWh · No Cash-Out
Customers who interconnected on or after January 1, 2020 — all new Louisiana solar customers in 2026 — pay the full retail rate for all electricity purchased from the utility, pay nothing for self-consumed solar, and receive a credit at the utility's avoided cost for any net excess generation exported to the grid. Entergy Louisiana's 2026 avoided cost is approximately 2.7 cents per kilowatt-hour. Credits are applied to the following month's bill. The annual true-up pays remaining credit balances at the avoided cost rate — so accumulated export credits are worth approximately 2.7 cents regardless of when they're applied.
The Louisiana solar proposal imperative: model self-consumption, not total production. A Louisiana system that produces 12,000 kWh per year but exports 5,000 kWh of that earns 5,000 × $0.027 = $135 for the exported portion, versus $600 if those kilowatt-hours had been self-consumed at the retail rate. Size Louisiana systems to approximately 100% of annual household consumption, minimizing export. Add battery storage to capture the daytime AC-load gap. Any Louisiana solar proposal that doesn't address the avoided cost export rate is an incomplete proposal.

Louisiana's electricity consumption pattern is driven by air conditioning — summer peak loads are massive, and AC runs heavily from late morning through late evening. This profile creates a structural mismatch with rooftop solar production that battery storage resolves.
